Course Description:

Learn to draw the beauty of Colorado’s landscapes through observation and simple, approachable drawing techniques. In this beginner-friendly workshop, students will explore the shapes, textures, and patterns found in trees, clouds, mountains, and other natural forms. Through demonstrations and guided exercises, participants will learn how artists simplify complex subjects, create the illusion of depth, and capture the character of the landscape.

Techniques

• Observational drawing skills
• Simplifying complex natural forms
• Basic composition and picture design
• Line quality and expressive mark making
• Creating depth through value, cross contours, overlap
• Drawing trees, clouds, mountains, and landscape elements
• Understanding light and shadow in nature
• Sketchbook techniques for continued practice

Artist Bio

Katy Betz is an artist, illustrator, and art educator with more than 15 years of teaching experience. She has taught at colleges and various art programs, helping students of all skill levels build confidence while developing strong artistic foundations. Alongside her teaching, she maintains an active studio practice centered on landscape painting and nature inspired illustration.

Through her YouTube channel, online courses, and educational workbooks, Katy encourages artists to slow down, observe deeply, and cultivate a sense of wonder through the creative process. Her workshops combine practical instruction with an encouraging, curiosity driven approach that makes art both approachable and meaningful.
