Exploring Clay Surface: Design and Decoration
SUMMER SESSION 2
Thursdays: June 26, July 3, 10, 17, 24
5:30pm-8:30pm
Classes: $215 for members, $250 for Friends/nonmembers.
If you’re finding that glazing and decoration is your least favorite part of the ceramics process, join us and let’s make it fun! In this class, students will make functional pieces and refine decoration techniques to make them sing! The instructor will lead students in creating depth in surface decoration using colorful layers of stains, underglazes, and slips. Students will explore surface carving techniques such as Mishima and Sgraffito. Students can also work on making pottery/dinnerware sets, refining what they want out of a functional piece, and using decoration and consistency to bring everything together.
This class is for both handbuilders and wheel-throwers. Students must be 18 years of age or older.
Bags of clay can be purchased for $25 each. Clay tools are provided on a first come, first served basis, and a personal set of basic clay tools can be purchased online for $20. Open Studio takes place Saturdays from 9am-5pm for each week that classes are active. Students must sign up and pay for open studio before their first class takes place in order to attend. Open studio time is only open to students that are concurrently taking a class.
Prior experience with ceramics is recommended. Students need to be able to center clay on the wheel or feel comfortable using molds for the most success. The instructor can and will talk about technique, but there won’t be time in class for teaching folks how to center clay.
