Damien Gilley is a multi-disciplinary artist and educator in Portland, Oregon. His work has been exhibited nationally and internationally. He is a contemporary installation artist who plays with perspective, line and lighting to create unique and immersive experiences. Damien will be filling our East Gallery with installations made in and specifically for our space.

Exhibition Statement:

The stained glass window is a portal for the fundamental source of life: energy. As light crosses through colored glass it transforms. It fills the space, instantly activating the area.

In this show, Damien has experimented to extend the definition of the physical space. Utilizing the light, he has intervened to give our surroundings new structure by reversing the source of illumination. Miniature constructions of refractive and reflective surfaces are a means to reinterpret the architecture.

The abstracted main gallery space counters a digital simulation of a window in the entry. Neither installation reinforces reality, instead they propose an alternative to the experience of physical limits. This allows us to see architecture in a way that is beyond its intended function.
