Juror Statement:
What was happening in your life when you created this work? How did it affect your creative process? We ask each artist to respond to these questions in their statement. We intended to give the audience insight into how external forces and circumstances affect artwork creation. Sometimes, they affect the work obviously, but more often, it is in a way known only to the artist. As you visit the exhibition, we hope you realize the significance of this topic and the truth that no art can be created in a vacuum.
“Art is what we call… the thing an artist does. It’s not the medium or the oil or the price or whether it hangs on a wall, or you eat it. What matters, what makes it art, is that the person who made it overcame the resistance, ignored the voice of doubt, and made something worth making. Something risky, something human. Art is not in the eye of the beholder. It’s in the soul of the artist.” Seth Godin
The soul is affected by these external forces and circumstances; it absorbs them and is changed. Over time, it defines and redefines beauty; artists express this through their work. As an artist, I find isolating my soul from the world around me impossible. My piece started with one event in my life and then evolved through complicated circumstances.
I selected pieces for this show that connect to our central question. I saw reflections on the subject matter in the colors, hues, obvious or subtle statements, and composition. I hope you can appreciate these details and our artist’s candor in letting us into their lives. How do your circumstances change your soul, how does this refine your understanding of beauty and how will you express it?
