SUMMARY:Panel Discussion with Structure Exhibition Artists
DESCRIPTION:Panel Discussion with Structure Exhibition Artists\nDate: Saturday\, October 17\, 2026\nTime: 1:30 – 3:30pm\nSchedule: 1:30pm – view the exhibition\, Structure. 2:00pm – panel discussion begins\nCost: Free\nLocation: Foothills Art Center – Astor House\, 1133 Arapahoe St \nDescription:\nJoin us for an engaging discussion showcasing the exhibition\, Structure\, which delves into the fundamental building blocks of ceramic artistry. Experience the profound connection between artists and their materials\, as we explore how these elements shape their creative processes and outputs. \nArtist:\nVicky Smith\nBebe Alexander\nAlleghany Meadows (not in attendance)\nJohn R Hamilton III\nGriffin Callahan \nFor any questions\, email Nathaniel at nathaniel@foothillsartcenter.org \nArtist Statements:\nVicky Smith\nMy work celebrates form and material. I am drawn to the tactile\, fluid nature that working with clay\nprovides along with the myriads of transformations that can come from the firing process. The\ninteraction of form\, surface\, color\, and patterning\, continually challenge and engage my practice.\nOrganic shapes inspire me\, with their sense of volume\, growth\, movement\, and the play of light and\ncast shadows that they create. Starting with these shapes\, I strive to create work that evokes\nnostalgia\, dream-like qualities\, or hints of a narrative. Humans often seek patterns\, similarities\, and\nconnections to make sense of our world. I often contemplate the complexity of our world and the\nways in which we see or understand only a fragment of a greater whole. \nBebe Alexander\nMy work lives in the space where architecture becomes metaphor\, and clay becomes a language for structure\, tension\, and balance. Drawing from the clean geometry of Art Deco and the raw mass of Brutalist architecture\, I build forms that are composed of interlocking components that negotiate\nweight\, rhythm\, and spatial relationships. My goal is that each sculpture becomes a study in how\nparts depend on one another\, how planes meet\, how volumes shift\, how a form can feel\nsimultaneously grounded and aspirational. Through this modular approach\, I explore connection and separation\, creating ceramic objects that echo the built world while asserting their own sculptural\nlanguage. \nAlleghany Meadows\nI often draw inspiration from details in nature\, the curving shape of the sky when seen from a solitary\nhilltop\, the tension in a peony blossom squeezing outward during a warm week in late May\, the\neroding layers of limestone deep in a desert canyon. I enjoy working physically hard\, long hours in the studio. Repetition and rhythm in my process are how I search for subtleties\, forms\, surfaces\, patterns\, emotions\, balance. I am fascinated by the potential when repeating elements stack and arrange\, becoming something greater than a sum-total of parts. A series of soup bowls nesting together evokes an emerging flower\, then transforms into a stage for sharing a meal\, then circles back to become a sculpture after they are washed\, poised and alert for their next experience. My hope is to subtly influence the way time is experienced and to inspire creative decisions in ordinary contexts\, like preparing a meal for loved ones\, eating breakfast\, arranging flowers or sipping tea. \nJohn Hamilton\nDriven by a fusion of space exploration\, science fiction\, and nostalgia\, my artistic practice\nfocuses on translating the depths of human imagination into physical form. As an artist trained\nin ceramics\, my creative fulfillment stems from the tactile process of building\, conceptualizing\nnarratives\, and executing them in three dimensions. Clay is a material that emphasizes\nmistakes in permanence while becoming a fragile object in its transformation. Mixed media is\nimportant in my process\, selecting\, including and utilizing the correct materials is critical to \narticulating each successive chapter of this ongoing visual diary. Much of my work revolves\naround the utilitarian world\, I am infatuated with the cup\, as an everyday object it becomes\nthe item that is important to an individual’s daily routine. It is a calling card and each part of it\nis crucial to its function. The weight\, comfort and balance of the handle\, thickness of the rim\nand how it feels against the mouth\, how the surface feels\, and the size are all important to\nhow we interact with these intimate objects. The cup is an experience. I invite you to engage\nwith my journey\, reconnect with your sense of wonder\, and rediscover the uninhibited\nimagination that shapes our formative years. \nGriffin Callahan\nMy work investigates the visual language of infrastructure—the systems\, connections\, and\ncomponents that quietly sustain everyday life. I am drawn to HVAC systems\, industrial fittings\, and\nmethods of fastening because they exist almost exclusively in service of function. These structures\ncirculate air\, regulate environments\, and literally exhaust what is no longer needed\, quietly expressing themselves through movement\, flow\, and release. In many ways\, this body of work emerged from my own sense of exhaustion\, becoming a way to process\, express\, and transform that experience through making.\nWorking in clay allows me to reconsider these utilitarian forms through the lens of craft. I am\ninterested in the tension between industry and handmade processes\, where engineered precision\nmeets material sensitivity. By translating functional systems into ceramic sculpture\, I shift them from the realm of utility into one of contemplation\, asking viewers to reconsider the aesthetic potential of objects that are rarely afforded sustained attention.\nSurface functions as a record of time. Through terra sigillata\, oxide stains\, and layered washes\, I\nevoke weathering\, oxidation\, and the accumulated histories embedded within industrial materials.\nThese finishes suggest cycles of maintenance\, exposure\, and repair\, revealing quiet narratives that\noften go unnoticed.\nColor serves as a deliberate interruption. While the forms reference infrastructure that is typically\nmuted or camouflaged within architecture\, bold and saturated color destabilizes those expectations.\nThese interventions invite slower looking\, transforming familiar systems into objects of curiosity and appreciation while revealing beauty within the structures that quietly support us every day.

SUMMARY:Contemplative Memoir - November 2026
DESCRIPTION:Contemplative Memoir \nInstructor: Peter Dunne \nStart Date: Wednesday\, November 4\, 2026 \nSchedule: Wednesdays\, November 4\, 11\, 18\, 25\, 2026\, 5:30pm- 7:00pm \nCost: Member $45 / Friend & Non-Member $85 \nSkill Level: All Levels \nLocation: Foothills Art Center – Creative Campus\, 809 15th St   \nCourse Description: \nWriting a memoir may be the most challenging and consequential writing we will ever do. We think we know ourselves well enough to write about our lives\, but the effort seems daunting\, and its value dubious. After all\, how do we begin to choose which stories to tell from all the days and years? And who cares? First of all\, no life is ordinary. No life is without miracles and magic\, great loss and great love. And probably no life is more crucial for our children to understand then ours\, because they share more than our genetics\, they share our spiritual DNA. What made us who we are\, helps them see who they can become. In that sense\, we leave them with more than stories. We leave them with meaning and hope.  \n  \nContact: For any questions\, please email Leslie Fitzsimmons at leslie@foothillsartcenter.org. \n***To receive the Member / Open Studio rate – please “login” the upper right- hand corner of this page with the email associated with your membership*** \n  \nPlease Note: Classes and workshops may be cancelled if enrollment minimums are not reached. This month: Mending! \n  \nLearn the techniques of visible mending with a demonstration showing creative ways to apply visible stitches\, with or without applying a patch. Bring a clothing item that you’d like to mend\, or practice the new skill on a provided sample piece. \n  \nBuild community\, learn practical skills\, and make new friends as you explore creative ways to reuse\, repair\, and repurpose textiles. Each session begins with a skill demonstration\, followed by time to make or mend together. The focus is on the process —not the finished product— and on learning textile skills we can share and practice as a community. You’re welcome to try the day’s technique\, or simply bring along a textile project you’re already working on and enjoy making with fellow textile lovers. In the meantime\, save clothes\, towels\, cloth napkins\, and other fabrics that could use a little mending or a new purpose. \n  \nContact: For any questions\, please email our Gallery and Programs Associate nathaniel@foothillsartcenter.org \n  \nPlease Note: Classes and workshops may be cancelled if enrollment minimums are not reached. You will be notified by telephone at least 3 days prior to the scheduled start date should cancellation become necessary. \n  \nArtist Bios: \nLia is a skilled knitter who loves learning new techniques and sharing them with others. She is an Open Studio Artist at Foothills Art Center\, making art weekly at our Creative Campus. Lia also volunteers at Foothills Art Center\, supporting events and programs. Lia helps facilitate SPARK!\, a monthly art-viewing and making program for people living with dementia and their caregivers.  \n  \nAngela is a maker with an architect’s eye\, bringing creativity and a thoughtful design perspective to her work. As the lead architect for the renovation and addition of Foothills Art Center’s Astor House\, she brings her love of adaptive reuse to a smaller scale by repairing\, repurposing\, and giving new life to well-loved clothing. \n  \nUpcoming Sessions:  \nDec 9 – Toy Repair
