Course Description: This 6-week hands-on art workshop invites young artists to explore the exciting world of collage — transforming everyday materials into imaginative works of art. Participants will learn to express their ideas and personal identity using basic collage techniques. These techniques include ripping or tearing the paper, cutting into shapes or strips, adding their own drawing, writing or doodling and by creating texture with special papers or layering.
Through weekly guided sessions, students will experiment with the various techniques and work with color and composition. The students will contribute to a community project and create individual pieces of art weekly.. Weekly workshops will include, but are not limited to:
Week 1: Students will discover the world of collage by experimenting with tearing and layering various materials in an art journal to explore different styles and textures.
Week 2: We will focus on composition by teaching students how to create visual balance, establish a focal point, and produce their own hand-painted papers.
Week 3: Students will dive deeper into color theory and arrangement techniques, such as layering and overlapping, to create specific moods in their work.
Week 4: After mastering the basics, students will collage a “brick” for a community art wall that expresses their personal experience at Foothills Art Center.
Week 5: Applying their new skills, students will design two personalized greeting cards for a loved one, complete with stamps for mailing.
Week 6: In the final week, students will create a meaningful self-portrait collage using a printed photo of themselves and materials that represent their unique identities.
*There is a $10 material fee per student that can be paid to the teacher at the start of class.
